Preparing to go to college can be one of the most stressful things that you ever do. You are probably leaving home for the first time, worried about what the future will hold, and as well as that you also have to figure out what it is that you should bring with you. If you have never lived away from your parents’ house, then there is a good chance that you have absolutely no idea what you will need to survive your first year of college, and it is definitely no fun playing trial and error. So here is a quick guide to the things that you will need.
There are a few things that, not just college students, but every living person requires to live on their own. These are things that you will probably want to pick up once you are in the city that you will be living in, rather than before. They also differ according to whether you are living in a dormitory or an apartment, where you will make your own food. If you are, then you will need toiletries, such as toilet paper, bath soap, towels etc., food and basic kitchen items such as a frying pan, a saucepan, a couple of plates, bowls, cups, and utensils. These are the kind of things that it is good to talk to your roommates about. You may want to split the cost and share them, or you may decide that it is better to all have your own. Another good thing to have is a good laundry hamper. You probably do not know how far away your laundry room is, but whether it is down the hall, down the block, or the room next to yours, you will want a hamper that is easy to carry and will fit a good amount of clothes in it – otherwise laundry will become a bigger pain than it already is!
At the beginning of each semester or term, you should get a booklist from your professors to know what textbooks to buy. College rule number one: textbooks are expensive. Rule number two: you cannot pass your classes without them. It sucks, but it’s the truth. However, you do not always have to pay top dollar for every book. Make sure that once you get your booklist, you check out a number of sources. If your college has a bookstore, check there first. Then check online on a number of different sites, such as Amazon or eBay, and you will find students from all over the country, as well as other retailers, selling those same books for different prices – better or worse. Often you will also be able to use those same websites to sell back your books after the semester is over. You also might want to think about whether or not you want a laptop – especially if (as more and more colleges are doing) your textbooks are online.
Going to college for the first time can be stressful enough, without a giant list of things to do getting in your way. So make sure that you are organized and get on top of things early. That way your first days of college can be just as fun as the rest!
