Almost everything we try to make requires some kind of ‘oil.’ And we have plenty of choices: vegetable oil, Olive Oil, Canola Oil, and more. The problem with this is that some are very good for you, while some are very bad and the price curve is huge. For $2 you can get about the same amount of Vegetable Oil as you can get with about $6 for Olive Oil. A big enough price difference to sway many of us towards the cheap, less healthy versions.
Personally I’ve always gone the cheap route. I’m a normal woman, with all the same financial problems the rest of us deal with. Naturally, I can’t go out there being the healthiest eating woman on the planet. I do what I can with what I have, and that means – no olive oil for me. Ironically, my mother just berated me for this shortcoming recently. When I told her I used vegetable oil she went on a small rant about how somebody as concerned about health as I am shouldn’t skimp out on that! But well, I choose to save money there, leaving money open for health in other areas.
Well, if you have been keeping up with the news, you’ve no doubt heard the claims that Extra Virgin Olive Oil can help prevent, or fight cancer. (Breast cancer, specifically)
Cancer runs in my family, so I’m always interested in learning about things that may help determine my fate, or that of my family. So when I read about this, little voices started going off in my head. “You should always listen to your mother.” How annoying is that?
This encouraged me to dig a little deeper into the topic. As it turns out, this news isn’t the news it people are making it out to be. Yes, extra virgin olive oil can help fight cancer, but using it instead of vegetable oil is not going to cut it. According to WebMD, the amount you get from regular ingestion is not enough to really compare to the results of this test.
The reason the news was such big news in the first place, is more for the scientists. Now they have another weapon at their disposal in the fight against cancer, and this is great news! But for us regular folk, we are going to have to wait to see the benefits of the research. This is the problem with news – they take what they want, leaving out the details they don’t want. Obviously if I owned a company that manufactured olive oil, or I was trying to sell it, I also wouldn’t want you to know the full story.
Which is why I decided to write this post. Now you know, and you can feel comfort knowing that you saved yourself a good chunk of money with that nice, cheap, vegetable oil. Unless of course you are the Coconut Oil type, in which case I tip my hat to you you, now that really has it’s benefits.
